Last night, Vodafone performed a remote firmware update (ver. 7.4.1.7) on their ADSL-bundled modem/routers (SpeedTouch 516v6).

The only real problem is that with the new firmware, the tiny SpeedTouch is now even more locked than before while there’s no real advantage for the consumer!

There’s still no bridge mode!
In fact, they’ve removed an option that should have permitted lan devices to handle the public IP instead of the modem/router despite that setting never seemed to work..
From now on, you also cannot access the modem thru telnet since the new firmware disabled the option to grant WAN & LAN admin options to created users, making impossible to play around with some settings explained earlier in this blog.

The only visible improvement from the previous version is the bandwidth displayed in the DSL connection tab:

  Poor service from Vodafone if you ask me!
